Ubuntu's a pretty cool guy. If you want to game on the desktop, make sure you dual boot with a windows, but only use windows for gaming. As for Ubuntu, you can try it via a USB boot. For what you described for you mum, it should be prefect. For drivers, make sure you are plugged into an ethernet cord if you plan on a wireless network card; It will download a 3rd party driver through the Software manager during the install. Some things I find annoying are the constant updates and asking for Password (really, really good for security, just annoying) and the fact that if you raise the volume via laptops function keys with a fullscreen youtube video it freezes it and you have to close the fullscreen and open it again. Also the fact nothing works on it, but Wine helps.

Love the weapons they've added to the game, been a fan since v0.4Bfmods were discussing how in the new patch they added support for 128 players. Downloaded it on Friday and played the shit out of it since then. Still have yet to see a 128 player server...

Where has the civility gone? School today was like sitting in a building full of bloodthirsty animals. Do people not think about how much death America and the USSR caused in the Middle East which caused his movement to gain massive sizes? The death toll there probably out-weights the meager 3.000 dead (not to be "cold", but 3.000 is not a lot compared to the amount of deaths the US caused during the Cold War).
